Hanzo Hasashi is an undead Ninja known as Scorpion. The hell-spawned spectre seeks vengeance against those responsible for the destruction of his clan and the death of his family. Despite his malevolent appearance, he is not inherently evil. He joins the forces of evil when promised a means of resurrecting his clan on Earth, or the chance to inflict his wrath against those who butchered them. Scorpion has also indirectly assisted the game’s protagonists to fulfill these motives.
Mortal Kombat
Two years after being slain by the elder Sub-Zero, Scorpion returned to Earthrealm and participated in Shang Tsung’s tournament. From what Quan Chi told him, he had to defeat Sub-zero to avenge the honor of his clan and family. However, it would not be until after Liu Kang’s defeat of Goro that he would catch Sub-Zero unguarded and have his revenge. After killing the Lin Kuei warrior, he returned to the Netherrealm.
Mortal Kombat II
While in the Netherrealm, Scorpion would catch wind of a new tournament in Outworld, and of Sub-Zero’s participation. Shocked and angered that his murderer somehow returned to life, Scorpion participated in Shao Kahn’s tournament. Scorpion would witness Sub-zero spare the life of an opponent. Eventually the hellspawn would deduce that Sub-Zero was not his murderer, just his younger brother. To atone for slaying his kin, Scorpion would secretly vow to protect Sub-Zero instead.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3/Mortal Kombat Trilogy
When Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm and unsuccessfully tried to conquer the Netherrealm as well, Scorpion was inadvertently set free. With his new found freedom he pledged his allegiance to no one, taking neither friends nor enemies. Shao Kahn recognized Scorpion’s superior warrior skills, and enlisted the ninja in his forces. The spectre would eventually discover that Sub-Zero was one of Earth’s Chosen warriors and therefore one of Shao Kahn’s targets. With this information, Scorpion would turn on Shao Kahn, and side with the Earthrealm warriors. With Shao Kahn and his minions defeated, Earth reverted back to normal, causing Scorpion to return to the Netherrealm once more.
Mortal Kombat 4/Mortal Kombat Gold
Sometime after Scorpion’s return to the Netherrealm, Quan Chi would tell him that Sub-Zero was the one who murdered his family. Hearing this angered Scorpion anew, and he took back his vow to protect Sub-zero. The spectre would go on to fight and defeat the Lin Kuei warrior who would reveal Quan Chi’s claims as deceit. The sorcerer would confess that he had tricked Scorpion, and that he was the one responsible. After Scorpion learned the truth, the sorcerer attempted to transport Scorpion back to the Netherrealm. The spectre however, managed to drag Quan Chi down with him.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
During the years that Quan Chi spent trapped in the fifth plane of the Netherrealm, he would be chased, brutalized, and tortured by Scorpion. Quan Chi’s power was limited in this region of the Netherrealm, while Scorpion was a bit stronger. In the sorcerer’s weakened state, escape seemed impossible. Eventually a deal with two Oni, Drahmin and Moloch, was struck. They fought off Scorpion for him, and when Quan Chi escaped the Netherrealm through a portal, Scorpion followed him. The portal would not send the wraith to the same place however. The hellspawn would be forced to track Quan Chi to Shang Tsung’s palace. Once there, he was ambushed by Drahmin and Moloch, who had also escaped the Netherrealm. They threw him into the Soulnado, believing that it would eliminate the ninja spectre once and for all.
Mortal Kombat: Deception
Scorpion managed to escape into the Void before the purity of the Soulnado tore him apart. While in the Void, he met the Elder Gods, and forever became changed from what he saw. Scorpion would witness Raiden’s sacrifice and Onaga’s dominance beginning to unfold. The Elder Gods were aware of his presence and enhanced his mortal and supernatural abilities. Scorpion became the Champion of the Elder Gods. They gave him a new mission, to seek and destroy Onaga before he unmade the realms. Scorpion emerged from the Void and returned to Outworld. The champion of the gods goes on to fight Shujinko to prevent Onaga’s resurrection but would not be victorious.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
After his fight with Shujinko, Scorpion was no longer willing to serve as the Elder Gods’ champion. Prior to Hanzo’s fight a deal had been struck for the resurrection of his family and clan in return for his services. While the Elder Gods did fulfill their promise, they were brought back as hellspawned warriors. Enraged at what Scorpion perceived as their betrayal, he vowed to gain vengeance on the Elder Gods. By removing the two crucial things to their plans to prevent Armageddon the, Edenian brothers Taven and Daegon, he would throw the realms into chaos.
In the battle between the Forces of Light and the Forces of Darkness in Edenia, Scorpion is seen fighting for the Forces of Darkness and battling Sub-zero. He was one of the final combatants to get near to the top of the pyramid, along with Shinnok. however, in the end he was killed along with the many others, his back pierced by Sub-zero’s Kori Blade.
Mortal Kombat 9
Scorpion entered Shang Tsung’s tournament to avenge his death and those of his kin and clan at the hands of the Lin Kuei assassin, Sub-Zero. Upon Scorpion’s first match in the tournament, he demanded a fight with Sub-Zero. The hellspawn warrior was instead challenged by the Shaolin Monk, Kung Lao. After defeating Kung Lao, Scorpion again demanded to fight Sub-Zero. Shang Tsung told Scorpion that he would demand nothing, and called Nightwolf’s name as Scorpion’s next opponent. Before their fight, Nightwolf tried to reason with Scorpion by telling him that his aggression was misplaced. Scorpion ignored Nightwolf’s words, and defeated him. Scorpion, more sternly this time, demanded Sub-Zero again. The previous victories of Scorpion impressed Shang Tsung, who told Scorpion that he will have his fight against Sub-Zero soon enough. Raiden having visions consisting of Scorpion killing Sub-Zero, and the rebirth as Noob Saibot, urged Scorpion to spare Sub-Zero. A bargain to arrange the revival of the Shirai Ryu if the spectre did not kill Lin Kuei assassin.
Upon entering Shang Tsung’s Palace, Scorpion was confronted by Sektor and Cyrax who challenged him to a fight. After defeating Cyrax and Sektor, Scorpion was confronted by his nemesis, Sub-Zero. He showed great disrespect to Scorpion and his clan’s memory. The hellspawn immediately transported him and his nemesis to the Netherrealm, where they engaged in Mortal Kombat. Scorpion emerged victorious and tried to stay true to his bargain with Raiden. Quan Chi unfortunately conjured images of the Lin Kuei slaughtering of the Shirai Ryu and his family. Enraged and reneging on his deal with Raiden, Scorpion ripped the mask from his head, revealing a skull engulfed in flames of pure hatred. Scorpion reappeared and Shang Tsung smiled in anticipation. Wordlessly, Scorpion held up a scorched skull with the spinal cord attached. The ninja specter had killed the Lin Kuei assassin Sub-Zero, rendering his deal with Raiden null and void. Near the first tournament’s end, Scorpion fought alongside Quan Chi to best Liu Kang. The last Earthrealm warrior in the tournament overpowered their combined effort.
During Shao Kahn’s tournament, Scorpion was summoned by Quan Chi to face Sub-Zero’s younger brother. Kuai Liang had taken over the mantle and was trying to avenge his elder brother, Bi-Han. Scorpion emerged from the Netherrealm and quickly realized that the Sub-Zero before him was not the same that he fought and killed before. After a brief exchange the two engaged in Mortal Kombat. Eventually Sub-Zero gained the upper hand and knocked Scorpion to the ground. Before Sub-Zero could finish Scorpion, Lin Kuei cyborgs captured him and Scorpion used the opportunity to flee.
During Shao Kahn’s invasion of Earthrealm, Scorpion was confronted by Raiden in the Netherrealm. When Raiden expressed disappointment with Scorpion’s decision to remain at Quan Chi’s side, Scorpion scornfully told him to save his pity. Raiden requested an audience with Quan Chi, but Scorpion refused. Annoyed by this, Raiden accused Scorpion for not saving his family, enraging the Spectre. Scorpion then battled the Thunder God, but lost and swiftly teleported away as Quan Chi appeared.
Mortal Kombat X
Scorpion was among those serving Quan Chi in the invasion of Earthrealm. Scorpion and Sub-zero attacked Sonya Blade’s team killing everyone but Johnny and Kenshi. Although he incapacitated Kenshi briefly, Scorpion was soon tackled by Cage out of the helicopter before it crashed and was then defeated by the actor. Some time later, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage travel to Quan Chi’s Fortress. The sorcerer intercepts them and has Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Jackson Briggs attack them. Scorpion faces against Sonya Blade and is defeated by her along with the others. After Raiden arrives to save Cage’s life, Scorpion is fully resurrected to his human self along with Jax and Sub-Zero by the Thunder God.
Five years before the game’s events, Hanzo trains with Takeda Takahashi and is beaten. Proud of his student’s success, Hanzo elevates him to the rank of Chujin. When Takeda states he looks forward to serving the Shirai Ryu, Hanzo informs him his future is not with the clan. He observes his student’s reunion with his father Kenshi and tries to convince Takeda his father is not an enemy. The two fight before and work things out.
During the same year, Hanzo travels to the Lin Kuei Palace when Kuai Liang invites him there. The two discuss an alliance, before they are interrupted by Frost, Sub-Zero’s pupil. She attacks Hanzo believing that Sub-Zero’s invitation was an assassination attempt on himself. Scorpion defeats Frost and attacks Sub-Zero. After fighting with the Lin Kuei Grandmaster, he prepares to kill him, but stops and calms down when Sub-Zero saves him from another attack by Frost. Scorpion forgives his old nemesis and Sub-Zero shows Sektor’s memory banks. The truth that the Lin Kuei had Quan Chi eliminate the Shirai Ryu was revealed to Hanzo. They decide to let bygones be bygones. and that neither of them feel any ill well towards the other.
In the present, after hearing that Quan Chi has been captured, Hanzo approaches Sonya Blade at the Refugee Kamp. He demands that the necromancer be handed over to him. When she refuses, Hanzo orders his ninjas to attack the Special Forces. He had previously ordered to merely subdue his allies and avoid killing. During the conflict, Scorpion defeats Sonya, Kenshi, and Johnny Cage when they attempt to stop him. Enraged that Quan Chi killed his family and manipulated him to kill Bi-Han, causing him to lose the only chance to restore his family, he savagely beats Quan Chi and decapitates him, finally avenging the death of his family. However, just moments before his death, Quan Chi is able to free Shinnok. In an attempt to stop the fallen Elder God, Hanzo attacks Shinnok with Sonya, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi. Shinnok simply incapacitates everyone flawlessly and captures Johnny. Following Shinnok’s departure with D’Vorah and the revenants of Earthrealm’s former defenders, a beaten Scorpion informs Cassie Cage and her team of the god’s destination.
Powers and abilities
Scorpion is most commonly associated with hellfire, the Netherrealm’s variant of fire. Scorpion is immune to the element and primarily uses it to confirm the death of his opponents, spewing it from his skull while unmasked. As a spectre, Scorpion is immune to death as his soul is still bound by revenge, allowing him to endlessly chase his targets until they have been silenced. He has the ability to teleport, often used in the form of surprise or ambush attacks, and can open portals to the Netherrealm at will. The scope of Scorpion’s powers depend on how long he remains in his abode, the Netherrealm.
After being fully resurrected, it’s revealed in the Mortal Kombat X comic series that Scorpion’s wraith powers and hellfire depend on his own emotional pain, as he must relive his greatest shame (the destruction of his family and clan) or witness his allies suffering (Takeda seemingly dying) in order to use it. By doing so, Hanzo becomes more wraith like, surrounded by hellfire, and his powers increase tremendously to the point they can even exceed deities in combat like Raiden. Although powerful, there is a drawback to every time Hanzo uses his powers; if he uses hellfire for too long, he risks being consumed by it, destroying his existence. Along with this, Hanzo’s Scorpion persona can overtake him, resulting in him acting less reasonable and more hostile.
Like many ninjas, Scorpion is well-versed in the art of armed kombat. He has wielded various weapons throughout the tournaments, from axes to the most recent twin Ninjato. His most recurring weapon is the Spear, a kunai attached to a sturdy rope, representing Scorpion’s “stinger”. At times, the spear is empowered with hellfire for more power. Various depictions of the spear had been made before Deadly Alliance. It was shown as a chain tied to a mace in the comics. His spear was a sentient, serpentine creature that spawned from within his hand during the films. He is empowered by the Elder Gods to defeat Onaga in Deception. However, Shujinko slays Onaga before he gets the chance.
